Refugees Memorial Garden
In the Hellegatstraat, some 300 metres from the church in Westouter, there is a memorial garden that commemorates the plight of refugees in the First World War and in other conflicts. It is a beautiful spot, surrounded by nature, where visitors can pause to reflect in an atmosphere of peace and calm. The panel mounted on chestnut posts displays a map that shows a number of general refugee routes, as well as the 'personal' routes followed by 30 or so refugee families. There is also a poem by Charles Ducal about present-day refugees.
The garden is a quiet place to stop briefly during a walk.
